We have been missing seeing some of you of late. Recently, for a few meetings, we have not had enough members attend our meeting to meet our minimum guarantee of 25 to the restaurant. Please make your best efforts to attend the meeting – there are several reasons to do so:
Give the guest speaker the attendance that we advertise to hear their message.
Spend some time with fellow members and keep in the touch with them.
Make sure we meet the guarantee, if we don’t we may have to look at raising membership fees to cover the shortfall in revenue.
Parking Note: There will be fewer surface parking spots so any NON over height vehicles should try to park underground. Reminder that parking is free until 8:30am.

7:45 Sarah Okuayanyi - on a CHES Scholarship
Sarah is here on a scholarship from CHES - Canadian Harambee Education Society.
Harambee is Swahili for "Pull Together".
Lorrie taught in Kenya 30 years ago and noticed that most were poor. She formed the Socieity and one of the first students was Sarah's father.
Sarah worked hard and got the scholarship and was sponsored to come to Canada by Lorrie.
In Kenya, most of the girls are responsible for all of the housework and as a result can’t study that much, but Sarah persevered and was fortunate to be able to come here.
Sarah hopes to graduate in 2020 and after graduation would like to live here and would also like to bring her parents here.
Leona Green helped set up a “Go Fund Me” page to help Sarah’s family build a house for them in Kenya.

Come join the party, up to 30 guests, hosted at Kathy & Bob’s, Saturday July 14, 2018. Evening includes Lorna’s famous rum punch, red strip beer, wine, jerk chicken, rice & beans and more. A true taste of the Islands, Man!
15 members contributed to sponsor a total of 10 water filter systems providing clean water for 10 families of up to 8 people.
This means that with the elimination of contaminated water, there will be NO more diarrhea caused by that, resulting in more kids going to school, more productivity in the rice fields (because the parents aren't home sick), a huge reduction in infant mortality (at 8.1% in the country) and extended lifespans.
Fantastic job fellow Rotarians Alana, Aman, Christiane, David, Gloria, Kathy, Kelly, Lorna, Merrilyn, Monica, Nick, Rick J, Rick M, Susan, Wendy. Thank you all very much for making such big difference to these Laos families. Tax receipts will be emailed to each donor as well as pictures of the recipients for each system. Donors', Club's and district's names will be labelled on each system
Members saw parts of the 2017 World Polio Day video at last week’s meeting. It was filmed at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation facility in Seattle. We saw D5040 Past District Governor Dean Rohrs, who is now a Rotary International Vice President speak and introduce the trailer of an inspiring movie “Breathe”, heard polio survivor, Nigerian Ade Adepitan, share about a dream came true to be a wheelchair basketball player in Sydney 2000 Paralympics Games, learned about how technology is making a significant difference in averting a polio outbreaks using polio surveillance systems and saw actress Julia Roberts experienced first hand delivering polio plus vaccines in a cooler to a remote village.

The "noon" club is celebrating their 90th anniversary February 11, 2018. This is a great time to meet the RI President in a smaller, more intimate setting than the Peace Conference. We are expecting the event to sell out, so get your tickets early.
The Good Host program is how YOU can get involved - you are invited to help out by meeting, greeting and sharing cultural experiences with our Youth Exchange student. Victor Xavier (Brazil) is here and deserve to see and experience Canada to the fullest.
Any one of us can be Good Hosts by simply sharing some time with Victor. A phone call, lunch, dinner with family, sporting event, cultural outing, almost anything goes. However - all who host our youth exchange student unsupervised - even for a day event - must have submitted the YE police check paperwork to Paige Freeman prior to hosting.
Please remember to include our youth exchange students in any activities you and your family participate in. Please speak to Victor directly or contact him at:
Greeters are the first point of contact for guests, potential new members, and our members. Making all who attend our meeting feel welcome is the responsibility of all of us as we all take turns being greeters.
1. All greeters should arrive no later than 6:40 am and be prepared to assist in setting up and preparing for the meeting. If a greeter cannot be present for their day of duties, please contact another member to fill in for you.
2. Greeter #1 will ensure that the sandwich board at the entrance
3. Greeter #2 will ensure that flags and banners are in place.
4. Greeters should welcome all members and guests and make them comfortable with the proceedings and surroundings, i.e., seating, coffee, schedule of meeting etc.
5. Greeter #1 greets and sits with the speaker to gather information useful in providing a respectful and meaningful introduction of the speaker and the program.
6. Greeter #2 thanks the speaker and presents the certificate of appreciation for their presentation.
NOTE: The certificate is NOT a contribution of $20.00 in the speakers’ name. We donate $20.00 to the Rotary Foundation in recognition of their presentation at the meeting.
7. Greeter #3 assists in taking down the flags, banners and places the sandwich board back in Kathy's office.
