Minutes at the Mic - June 21, 2017

There are a lot of exciting things going on. To find out more about the Pot of Gold Tournament, Rotary Foundation 100th Year and more.

 

Parking Note: There will be fewer surface parking spots so any NON over height vehicles should try to park underground. Reminder that parking is free until 8:30am.
 

Minutes at the Mic:

 

 

7:00am: singing of, "O Canada" 

7:05am: breakfast served. 

7:10am: introduction of guests: Eric (owner of Angelina's), Juan, Gabrielle and Sarah, Dr. Christiani and Fabiano Diaz, Lavinia, Maria and Tom. 

7:15am: minutes at the mic:

  • Roy thanked everyone for the gift he received at the installation dinner.
  • Roy also thanked Wendy, Nick, Rick Janssen, and his wife Sarah for helping Doug clean out his apartment. 
  • Rick reminded everyone about the pot of gold golf tournament coming this July 11th and there is a committee meeting next week after the regular meeting. 
  • Alana updated everyone on Palmer... He is still in the hospital recovering. 
  • Monica is looking for pot of gold volunteers.
  • Gloria spoke about the rotary foundation peace fellow applicants, we are endorsing two applicants one from Afghanistan and one from Kosovo.
  • Juan thanked the club for helping him out going on the BC tour.
  • Gloria gave Andrew a prize for his kind acts from last week. 
  • Aman spoke about note taking during the meetings... As Aman is going to be president, he cannot be the note taker anymore and is looking for someone to take over with the note taking.
  • We all sang happy birthday to Olivia. 

7:20am: toonie bucket: winner is Hansi! 

7:30am: guest speaker:  Gabriel and Sarah from Port Townsend spoke about Victorian living. They bring elements of history back into modern life. They have degrees on history and library sciences. Sarah is a writer that has written a few novels about Victorian living. Victorian living has been a gradual process for Gabriel and Sarah. They started with wearing the clothes.  They both live a Victorian lifestyle including, but not limited to, using oil lamps, ice boxes, and wood stoves.  During the Victorian times, people's strengths were highlighted and they combined their skills together to get tasks done.  Quinn presented the certificate, and Roy took the picture.

Sad News - Honourary Member Mabel Panton Passed Away March 19, 2017

Honourary Member Mabel Panton Passed Away March 19, 2017

Mabel Panton passed away March 19, 2017. There was a memorial at a church in Point Grey late April. For the newer members in the Club Mabel was an honorary member after her husband Dr. Bill Panton passed away. He was a long time Rotarian and his last club was ours. Bill and Mabel lived  on Hansi’s floor here on the Quay.

Royal City Rotarians take top prizes at New Westminster Chamber Golf Tournament

Rick Molstad and Roy Prevost at the chamber golf tournament on June 8th – the theme was Caddy shack. Rick and Roy came appropriately dressed and for their efforts won first and second prize for the most original costumes.

Good Host Program

The Good Host program is how YOU can get involved - you are invited to help out by meeting, greeting and sharing cultural experiences with our Youth Exchange students. Juan Herrera (Mexico) and Lavinia Cappriccioli (Italy) are here and deserve to see and experience Canada to the fullest. 

Any one of us can be Good Hosts by simply sharing some time with Juan and Lavinia. A phone call, lunch, dinner with family, sporting event, cultural outing, almost anything goes. However - all who host our youth exchange student unsupervised - even for a day event - must have submitted the YE police check paperwork to Paige Freeman prior to hosting.

Please remember to include our youth exchange students in any activities you and your family participate in. Juan and Lavinia can be contacted as follows:

Greeter Duties

Greeters are the first point of contact for guests, potential new members, and our members. Making all who attend our meeting feel welcome is the responsibility of all of us as we all take turns being greeters.

1.       All greeters should arrive no later than 6:40 am and be prepared to assist in setting up and preparing for the meeting. If a greeter cannot be present for their day of duties, please contact another member to fill in for you.

2.       Greeter # 1 will ensure that the sandwich board at the entrance

3.       Greeter # 2 will ensure that flags and banners are in place.

4.       Greeters should welcome all members and guests and make them comfortable with the proceedings and surroundings, i.e., seating, coffee, schedule of meeting etc.

5.       Greeter # 1 greets and sits with the speaker to gather information useful in providing a respectful and meaningful introduction of the speaker and the program.

6.       Greeter # 2 thanks the speaker and presents the certificate of appreciation for their presentation. NOTE: The certificate is NOT a contribution of $20.00 in the speakers’ name. We donate $20.00 to the Rotary Foundation in recognition of their presentation at the meeting.

7.       Greeter # 3 assists in taking down the flags, banners and places the sandwich board back in Kathy's office.

·         Greeters may change duties amongst themselves if desired.
