Bert Walker is a local author and has written a book of her own experiences titled `Love at First Sight`.  It is a 1950's interracial love story about how a white Canadian women and a black American man married and raised a family in Canada. Bert Walker has lived in the Lower Mainland her entire life. She is a graduate of Burnaby South High School. Thirty years ago she started her own publishing company for magazines. The company continues to operate and is run by one of her sons.
`Love At First Sight`is available at Black Bond Books in the River Market. 
 
Roy visited Palmer on Monday and uncovered his secret to recuperation.

Victims Assistance

New Westminster Victims Assistance program had their AGM on May 14th. The Victims Assistance van that our club sponsors will be in the Hyack Parade on May 23rd. Monica is driving and has room for company.

Pot of Gold is only two months away!

Bicycle Rodeo

The Sapperton Street Festival Bicycle Rodeo is on June 14th. Volunteers are needed to teach bike handling skills. Currently signed up to help are Aman, Nick, Roy, Kelly and Ken. We could use a few more. There is a registration and prize table to be manned as well. The event runs from 11-4. Contact Gordon to sign up.

District Conference Award

At District Conference our club received an award for largest increase in membership for clubs with over 25 members. Our current membership is at 38.

Angie Receives Paul Harris Award

We were all pleased to see Angie at our breakfast this past week. Andrew presented her with a Paul Harris plus seven pin.

Alana`s Birthday was on the 14th.

Tony's Book Club

Tony's book club is in full swing.  The recommended reading is `Think like a freak`.  This is a real book

Grant's Memorial Service

A service will be held for Grant on Thursday May 21, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Kearney’s Columbia Bowell Chapel at 219 6th Street, New Westminster, BC.  There will be a reception after the service at the same place.

Greeter Duties

Greeters are the first point of contact for guests, potential new members, and our members. Making all who attend our meeting feel welcome is the responsibility of all of us as we all take turns being greeters.

1.       All greeters should arrive no later than 6:40 am and be prepared to assist in setting up and preparing for the meeting. If a greeter cannot be present for their day of duties, please contact another member to fill in for you.

2.       Greeter # 1 will ensure that the sandwich board at the entrance

3.       Greeter # 2 will ensure that flags and banners are in place.

4.       Greeters should welcome all members and guests and make them comfortable with the proceedings and surroundings, i.e., seating, coffee, schedule of meeting etc.

5.       Greeter # 1 greets and sits with the speaker to gather information useful in providing a respectful and meaningful introduction of the speaker and the program.

6.       Greeter # 2 thanks the speaker and presents the certificate of appreciation for their presentation. NOTE: The certificate is NOT a contribution of $20.00 in the speakers’ name. We donate $20.00 to the Rotary Foundation in recognition of their presentation at the meeting.

7.       Greeter # 3 assists in taking down the flags, banners and places the sandwich board back in the cupboard.

·         Greeters may change duties amongst themselves if desired.

The Good Host program is how YOU can get involved - you are invited to help out by meeting, greeting and sharing cultural experiences with our Youth Exchange student.  Clémence Samani and Kana Iida are here and deserves to see and experience Canada to the fullest. 

Good Hosts are designated each week - but also can be anyone who would like to share some time with Clémence and Kana - a phone call, lunch, dinner with family, sporting event, cultural outing. However - all who host our youth exchange student unsupervised - even for a day event - must have submitted the YE police check paperwork to Cheryl Dean Thompson prior to hosting.

To get a hold of Clémence, simply call her at Cel: 778-829-2532 or email her at treetickler@yahoo.ca  Clémence is currently staying with Paige Freeman Ph:  604-375-1582.   

Special Note:  Clémence has a severe allergy to fish, shell fish (anything that comes out of the water) and kiwi's. She carries an epi-pen just in case. (she's also allergic to cats)
