Minutes at the Mic - June 7, 2017

There are a lot of exciting things going on. To find out more about the Pot of Gold Tournament, Rotary Foundation 100th Year and more.

 

Parking Note: There will be fewer surface parking spots so any NON over height vehicles should try to park underground. Reminder that parking is free until 8:30am.
 

Minutes at the Mic:

 

 

7:00am: singing of, "O Canada" 

7:05am: breakfast served. 

7:10am: introduction of guests: John Berry, Juan, Maria, and Lavinia. 

7:15am: minutes at the mic: 

  • Maria: this past Thursday the high school had their scholarship night, Maria received the Don MacKenzie scholarship and she thanked everyone. 

  • Monica is still looking for volunteers for the pot of gold tournament. 

  • Roy reminded everyone that there is no meeting next week. 

  • Alana gave an update on Palmer who is still in the hospital. If you would like to visit him, please ask Alana. Alana also reminded about the foundation donations. There are still some people who have not paid their fee for Bob and Kathy's BBQ. 

  • Kathy reminded everyone of the installation dinner next Friday at 6pm.

  • Gordon will be doing the sunshine moments at the installation dinner, so if anyone has any pictures, send them to Gordon. 

  • we all sang, "happy birthday" to Sandy and Rob. 

7:20am: toonie bucket: winner is Gordon! 

7:30am: guest speaker:  Our exchange student Lavinia spoke to us about her experience in Canada and her home country Italy. She is from Rome, Italy. Italy is famous for its wine, food and fashion.  Lavinia's signature dish is carbonara pasta.  Lavinia shared a variety of pictures of Italy. Lavinia also shared pictures of her friends and family in Italy. Lavinia also shared pictures from her stay in Canada. Roy presented the certificate, and Wendy took the picture.

Chamber Golf Tournament

Royal City Rotarians take top prizes at New Westminster Chamber Golf Tournament

Rick Molstad and Roy Prevost at the chamber golf tournament on June 8th – the theme was Caddy shack. Rick and Roy came appropriately dressed and for their efforts won first and second prize for the most original costumes.

Rotary Century Ride - 100K

  • Gord was pleased to report that The Rotary Century Ride held on Sunday May 21st was a success and plans for it to be an annual event

  • Goal of $1,000 was surpassed with 20 riders in either 20Km/100Km/160Km and donations from Tanex and 2 riders.

  • Riders were treated with water, lemonade, coffee, tea, granola bars, bananas, apples & oranges sponsored by Starbucks, Save-On Food, Safeway, and the Salvation Army Huey truck through Carlos. A catered lunch was provided by corporate sponsor, The Original Bike Shop-Caps Bicycle Museum and finishing riders received a souvenir Victorian tea cup.

  • Members were thanked for their participation in making it happen including Roy, Merrilyn & husband Don, Rick J, Kelly, Andrew & daughter Kathleen, David, Arlene, Wendy, Haze & mom Lynne, Monica, Ken, Gloria and prospective New West Rotaractor home for break from Montreal, Keisha.

  • Riders interviewed gave positive feedback; everyone had fun and suggestions for improvements were received. Gloria will prepare full report for the members and an event planning binder for future planning.

Good Host Program

The Good Host program is how YOU can get involved - you are invited to help out by meeting, greeting and sharing cultural experiences with our Youth Exchange students. Juan Herrera (Mexico) and Lavinia Cappriccioli (Italy) are here and deserve to see and experience Canada to the fullest. 

Any one of us can be Good Hosts by simply sharing some time with Juan and Lavinia. A phone call, lunch, dinner with family, sporting event, cultural outing, almost anything goes. However - all who host our youth exchange student unsupervised - even for a day event - must have submitted the YE police check paperwork to Paige Freeman prior to hosting.

Please remember to include our youth exchange students in any activities you and your family participate in. Juan and Lavinia can be contacted as follows:

Greeter Duties

Greeters are the first point of contact for guests, potential new members, and our members. Making all who attend our meeting feel welcome is the responsibility of all of us as we all take turns being greeters.

1.       All greeters should arrive no later than 6:40 am and be prepared to assist in setting up and preparing for the meeting. If a greeter cannot be present for their day of duties, please contact another member to fill in for you.

2.       Greeter # 1 will ensure that the sandwich board at the entrance

3.       Greeter # 2 will ensure that flags and banners are in place.

4.       Greeters should welcome all members and guests and make them comfortable with the proceedings and surroundings, i.e., seating, coffee, schedule of meeting etc.

5.       Greeter # 1 greets and sits with the speaker to gather information useful in providing a respectful and meaningful introduction of the speaker and the program.

6.       Greeter # 2 thanks the speaker and presents the certificate of appreciation for their presentation. NOTE: The certificate is NOT a contribution of $20.00 in the speakers’ name. We donate $20.00 to the Rotary Foundation in recognition of their presentation at the meeting.

7.       Greeter # 3 assists in taking down the flags, banners and places the sandwich board back in Kathy's office.

·         Greeters may change duties amongst themselves if desired.
