Dear Presidents and District Rotarians:
As the week draws to a close, below are some positive feel good news:
Celebrate being part of our District 5040
Each of us in D5040 have much to celebrate and be proud of. Below are some FYIs PDG Chris Offer was kind to share with us from an international perspective.
- D5040 is establishing a sound reputation for our support for the peace centers and peace programs.
- D5040 is an at large district for assisting peace scholar applicants finding it difficult to connect with a Rotary district.
- The recent Presidential Peace Conference in February gave us an international reputation.
- PDG John Anderson was invited by the director of the peace centers program to be a reader of peace scholar applications. John read 40 applications this year about half in a very short time. PDG Chris continue to be a reader and chair the Peace Major Gifts committee.
- Our support for the Columbia peace project is moving forward and will come to fruition in 2019. You may attend as observers at your own expense - more info at https://rotary5040.org/Stories/columbia-peace-project
- More of our clubs having peace champions and are engaging in peace initiatives.

More to celebrate specifically regarding Rotary Peace Fellowship
Many thanks to all club members who in this past year have made efforts to find eligible candidates and plant seeds for future applications. Special thanks to the District Peace Fellowship Subcommittee (Chris Loat, Peter Beynon, Dana Jantzen, John Haley) for staying committed and continuing to annually reach out to their communities and local organizations to promote this amazing Rotary opportunity to further peace building work in our world.
Here are some FYIs and great news results of the 2019 program.
Applicants
This past year we had the largest number of applicants, 6 and we interviewed 5 who were eligible and endorsed all 5. Usually the results are not known until end of October or early November. We now have the results and 2 of our 5 were successful, one in each program.

2. New Westminster - Royal City, Lizz Kelly, Paul Esslinger, Rick Molstad (endorsed Saeed Abdi of Somalia)
3. Vancouver - Gerry Glazier, John Bathurst, Parisa Adrangi (endorsed Holly Elissa - Canada and USA )
4. Vancouver Sunrise, Abigail Turner, Matthew Lynam, John Haley (endorsed Bronwyn Manley of Australia )
5. Williams Lake, Williams Lake Daybreak , Shelia Mortensen, Ashlee Hyde( endorsed Reanna McMillan)
Internationally, there were over 1300 applicants with almost 700 that were endorsed and submitted to The Rotary Foundation. As you can see, it has become highly competitive and while we endorsed 5 who were great candidates doing excellent peace building related work, 2 were successful recipients.

Bronwyn Manley - Masters Program - University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Duke -UNC Rotary Peace Center - reviewed by The Rotary Club of Vancouver Sunrise.
2020 applications
Rotary Peace Centers will usually have applications ready by January 2019. I will let you know when that is available.
In the meantime, begin to look for, if you haven’t already started, eligible candidates.
Be proud of this great news for the recipients, clubs, our district and for the ripple effects of all the great work they will do through this amazing Rotary opportunity.
