7:47 Speakers George Garrett and Orrie Babiuk from the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society

  • George and Orrie spoke of the origins of the society after the Cancer Society stopped doing it. John McKinnon organized the group as the need was apparent.
  • George and Orrie both have roots in New West, George with his 40+ years at CKNW and Orrie being born and raised in New Westminster.
  • The group is now going into its third year. George’s role is to talk to clubs and municipalities to raise money in donations.
  • Donations come from a variety of sources including many clubs, municipalities and governments.
  • The Firefighters have been a great help as well as they are susceptible to a variety of cancers fighting fires.
  • Drivers are reimbursed .41c per kilometer. A significant number of drivers donate all or part of their costs back to the society.
  • Orrie talked about the dispatching part of the organization. Cancer patients can call a toll free number and depending on the location one of 5 or 6 dispatchers will call them back and assign a driver(s) to their next appointment(s).
  • In 2017 over 6,000 drives were made to various treatment centers and over 300,000 km were driven on these trips.

New Westminster "Noon" Rotary Club Plans 90th Year Celebration
The "noon" club is celebrating their 90th anniversary February 11, 2018. This is a great time to meet the RI President in a smaller, more intimate setting than the Peace Conference. Tickets can be purchased online at www.90years.newwestrotary.org. You can also request tickets by email and pay with a cheque payable to The Rotary Club of New Westminster. We are expecting the event to sell out, so get your tickets early.

Good Host Program

The Good Host program is how YOU can get involved - you are invited to help out by meeting, greeting and sharing cultural experiences with our Youth Exchange student. Victor Xavier (Brazil) is here and deserve to see and experience Canada to the fullest.

Any one of us can be Good Hosts by simply sharing some time with Victor. A phone call, lunch, dinner with family, sporting event, cultural outing, almost anything goes. However - all who host our youth exchange student unsupervised - even for a day event - must have submitted the YE police check paperwork to Paige Freeman prior to hosting.

Please remember to include our youth exchange students in any activities you and your family participate in. Please speak to Victor directly or contact him at:

Greeter Duties

Greeters are the first point of contact for guests, potential new members, and our members. Making all who attend our meeting feel welcome is the responsibility of all of us as we all take turns being greeters.

1.       All greeters should arrive no later than 6:40 am and be prepared to assist in setting up and preparing for the meeting. If a greeter cannot be present for their day of duties, please contact another member to fill in for you.

2.       Greeter #1 will ensure that the sandwich board at the entrance

3.       Greeter #2 will ensure that flags and banners are in place.

4.       Greeters should welcome all members and guests and make them comfortable with the proceedings and surroundings, i.e., seating, coffee, schedule of meeting etc.

5.       Greeter #1 greets and sits with the speaker to gather information useful in providing a respectful and meaningful introduction of the speaker and the program.

6.       Greeter #2 thanks the speaker and presents the certificate of appreciation for their presentation.

NOTE: The certificate is NOT a contribution of $20.00 in the speakers’ name. We donate $20.00 to the Rotary Foundation in recognition of their presentation at the meeting.
