Guest speaker Fraser Stewart Barnett spoke on his participation in Adventures in Forestry.  Fraser spoke passionately about his experience visiting a vast number of forestry plants in BC.  He visited wood mills, pulp mills, and even got a chance to see the initial attack base where they fight all of the forest fires in Prince George.  Fraser got to see the waterbombers at the Prince George base.  He had the most fun in Prince George.  He graduated highschool and is going to study Forestry at UBC this fall.  His trip was funded by the Royal City Rotary Club.

Letter from Fran

Fran attends her last meeting at Royal City Rotary and writes a letter:

Hello everyone, I am in the last month of my exchange in Canada and I am so glad I came here. Although, it hurts so much by now. I still have 3 weeks here but my friends are gone. I am getting better with goodbyes now, not because I had a lot but because it does not look like I am actually saying bye to people, it seems I will see them tomorrow again and we will laugh our ass off again, but unfortunately I will not see them tomorrow, and I have no single clue when we will be together again. But I know they are in my heart with everybody else I love, and now I understand why the definition of Rotary exchange program is keeping the peace in the world, it is because we cannot go to war with people we love.

When I came here I thought I had friends but my best friends are here (all over the world) and they made my life so much richer. I am very glad that I came to Canada, I know that my first choice was Germany, but does not matter the place you go, who makes your exchange the best year of your life is you, it is a matter of choice. I decided to write a few parts of my final speech to my rotary club. There we go:

I appreciate what Rotary has done in the world and it is marvelous how I got to know about the youth exchange program, I wish every single kid on earth could have this opportunity. I want to let you know the change I notice in myself. I grew up so much in here that I do not think I would have learned everything I did even if I had lived for 50 years. I learned that life can be complicated sometimes and people are more complicated than I thought they were, but it is our choice to be happy and go ahead because life does not stop. I took the wrong bus so many times, I got lost once, but I did not panic or anything at all, I learned how to be patient. I learned how to control my emotions, I laughed everyday but I still have my serious face. I learned so much that I cannot put on the paper. I discovered how much I love to be in the woods, especially when there is no snakes and spiders around. I love how green Canada is and how embracing the people are in here, I love the cold, the snow, and I love camping, skiing, and hiking, and I love Vancouver, the thing with Canada is, does not matter where you are from you always can find a piece of your home here. I think I am ready to go home now, I learned something every single day here, And now I am going home, I am not going to dream in English anymore, I won't mess up with 2 languages anymore because my brain will adapt itself back to Portuguese, but the magic of my Canadian dream will always live inside me. Thank you so much for everything and for believing in me and making my life better, and thank you Canada for making me a better person.

“ Being an exchange student is letting your heart be divided into several small pieces and let them be taken to every corner of the world...and hope that one day they all meet again.” unknown
