28th ANNUAL ROTARY POT OF GOLD CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT
RECAP
The 28th edition of the Rotary Pot of Gold Charity Golf Tournament took place on July 16th last in the familiar setting at the Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club in Richmond where we have had much success for many years with the favourable weather and course conditions. The tournament was again well-supported by our community with many golfers, sponsors and donors. And the beneficiaries are very grateful.
The golfers teed off in a shotgun start at 1PM and worked their way around the course with a good pace of play. The tournament had offered a Hole-in-One prize on each of the four par 3 holes, and they were worth $50,000 each (cash or a car). No one claimed to have won one of these contests, but we were ready to have the necessary paperwork done right at the course.
Other contests included longest and straightest drives, KPs (men’s and women’s contests) as well as a putting contest with Michele and Cindy and a chipping contest with Kinga and Jessica of the BC Lions UPROAR Dance Team. And a photographic record was made by award-winning local photographer Gabor Gasztonyi and his wife, Judy.
The golfers were well-nourished over the course of the round of golf. Starting with a large bag lunch supplied by Canada Safeway (McBride) followed by The Boathouse, Boston Pizza and Salvation Army with delicious and nutritious foods. And we mustn’t forget the “Candy Bar” at the putting contest, courtesy of the Inn at the Quay.
The apres-golf was a wonderful buffet at the banquet room at Mayfair Lakes. The evening festivities went quickly, awards handed out and all headed home long before the sun went down.
In addition to the enjoyment of all participants, we were successful in raising approximately $37,000 this year, and the total for all years is just over $700,000….The funds will be shared by the two New Westminster Rotary Clubs as well as Salvation Army and Purpose Society to pay for programs for youth in our community.
We need to acknowledge the tremendous support of our sponsors (some of whom have been sponsors of our tournament since the very beginning in 1996. Support from Title Sponsor Cassady has always been very generous with sponsorship, golfers and donations of items for the online auction.
Next year’s tournament is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, July 15th at Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club again. Mark it in your calendar. You will be hearing from us when the calendar flips to 2025 (already??). We hope to see you again at our 29th Rotary Pot of Gold Charity Golf Tournament.
